If you Google \u201cwhat is leadership?\u201d you will get 2.28\nbillion results. Amazing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most definitions focus on leading others towards a common\npurpose. Paul Polman, the former CEO of Unilever defined it as: \u201cLeadership is\nhelping people succeed, inspiring and uniting people behind a common purpose\nand then being accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Focusing on contemporary definitions, many agree that\nleadership has two key components. The first is about what<\/em><\/strong> you\nare leading (a business for example) and it refers to strategy and execution.\nStrategy will deal with vision, innovation, adaptability, direction, etc. Execution\nis about focus, pragmatism, and order. The second is about whom<\/em><\/strong>\nyou are leading, or the interpersonal side of leadership and how you lead. A\nleader needs to develop his\/her team, build relationships, support and empower\nothers and also be confident, driven, and decisive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The core of most Business School programs focuses on\nexecution and strategy, teaching students hard skills about finance, marketing,\noperations, strategy, innovation, organizational behavior, and others. They also teach you about the complexities of\nthe modern world, competition, and multi-cultural issues among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So, what is lacking? The so-called \u201csoft skills\u201d which for\nmany are considered nice to have and not essential. Here are a few:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Communication skills. The ability to truly listen without\njudgment, to be focused when listening, and to be empathetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vulnerability and humility. To learn, a leader needs to be\nhumble and vulnerable admitting he\/she does not know everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Resiliency. The confidence and strength necessary to face\ndifficult situations head-on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Delegation. How to let go of \u201ccontrol\u201d instincts and trust\nthe team to get the work done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is not intended to be a complete list, but to create\nawareness of certain skills that are essential to leadership and yet are not\ncommonly taught. Some will argue that many of these skills are learned through\nexperience, which is true, but what if we could speed up the learning process?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In my opinion, a good first step is self-awareness. To grow\nas a leader, and as a person, it\u2019s important for us to understand our\nstrengths, behaviors, limitations, and areas for development. Self-awareness\ncan also help you build trust and credibility with your team. How do you become\nmore self-aware? Personality assessments, honest 360\u00ba reviews, and asking and\nallowing for candid feedback from friends and colleagues can be a good starting\npoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some of the other so-called \u201csoft skills\u201d can be learned and need practice to master. These skills are no longer \u201cnice to have\u201d, they are essential skills for true leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
