Without innovation organizations will find themselves in a\ndead end. Companies with innovative concepts, such as Google, Amazon, Netflix\nand We Work, are all &nbsp;are all examples of\norganizations that &nbsp;disrupted traditional\nways of doing existing things like searching for information, buying books,\nrenting movies and even renting office space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Innovation can be\nincremental, based on improving an existing concept or disruptive, as was the\ncase of Amazon when they began selling books online and later creating a\nplatform for virtual reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong><em>\u201cCreativity is thinking up new things.\nInnovation is doing new things\u201d<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; Theodore Levitt. (Economist,\nProfessor and Marketer) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To&nbsp; be&nbsp;\ninnovative you first have to&nbsp;\nharness your creative ability. &nbsp;Airbnb\nbegan disrupting the hotel business in 2008 and got its name when its three\nfounders rented out air mattresses on the floor of their San Francisco\napartment during a design conference, when most of the city&#8217;s hotel rooms were\nsold out. They recognized that people were looking for an affordable local\nexperience and that you actually did not need to own real estate to accomplish\nthat goal. They used out-of-the-box thinking and made it work!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge is,\nwe often struggle to <strong><em>allow<\/em><\/strong> ourselves to truly be creative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fall in creativity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For most people,\nthe use of a creative mind is maximized at age 5 and then falls dramatically\nfor the next several years.&nbsp; By age 20\nmost people are using only 2% of their brain\u2019s creative abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"434\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stepforwardcoaching.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Creativity-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-751\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stepforwardcoaching.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Creativity-1.jpg 567w, https:\/\/www.stepforwardcoaching.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Creativity-1-300x230.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why\ndoes this happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From an early age we are taught to adapt to norms accepted by the\nsociety we live in.&nbsp; While this is an\nimportant survival mechanism, before we realize it, our mind is imprisoned in\nbeliefs and standardization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As young children, we allowed our mind to fly into imaginary realms\nwhere everything was possible. We were authentic, guided by our own feelings\nand impressions. Boy, were we imaginative and creative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we grow a little older (5-12), we enter the socializing cycle and\nstart to conform to the patterns and beliefs from our close authoritative\nfigures: parents, grand-parents, siblings, teachers etc. We hear the word \u201cno\u201d\na lot and begin to limit ourselves not only in what we do but how we think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We quickly adapt to the behavioral forms\nand customs within our society. We want to be approved by authority figures\nand&nbsp; accepted by friends and\nacquaintances, and we begin to&nbsp; value\nwhat others say about us. Many times, we begin to observe and emulate authority\nfigures and&nbsp; often become risk averse,\nwith fear of being rejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;As adults, how can we harness\nour creative potential?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At an individual level, we have to learn how to become better\nlisteners, and avoid judging and criticizing others. We have to learn how to\n\u201cunfocus\u201d and avoid conformity and sameness.
